    TEACHERS & COUNSELORS

YOUR FAST LANE TO EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES

Are you a Georgia teacher or career counselor with students interested in a skilled trade career within the construction industry? Most people think of “vertical” construction first, but a large piece of the overall the construction industry is “horizontal,” which encompasses the building of roads and bridges. We can help you and your students – both male and female – learn about the many job types, career paths and skills needed for a successful career in highway construction.

Georgia Road Jobs, an initiative launched several years ago by the Georgia Highway Contractors Association, is working to raise awareness about careers in this fast-growth sector. Thanks to the Transportation Funding Act passed by the state Legislature in 2015, nearly $1 billion a year is flowing into transportation projects across our state, creating a long-term demand for highway construction workers.

RESOURCES

  • GeorgiaRoadJobs.com. This website is an excellent resource for both educators and students! Take time to review the entire site which includes in-depth information about job types, career paths, salary information and a list of contractors hiring by region throughout the state.
  • Videos. The videos on this site, which are also posted on the Georgia Road Jobs YouTube channel, are one of the best ways for students to learn about what a career in this industry looks like. They feature real workers on the job sharing what they like about their careers and are ideal for use in the classroom.
  • Classroom Speakers. Georgia’s road contractors are committed to educating future workers and are available for in-classroom visits to talk about the industry and career opportunities.
  • Field Trips. While visiting an actual job site can be difficult, there are plenty of jobs within highway construction that are located elsewhere. For example, a tour of an asphalt plant could be a great way to get students interested in a career involving asphalt.
  • Job/Career Fairs. Georgia Road Jobs conducts several career fairs throughout the state during the spring when hiring season begins to ramp up. Check this website for dates or sign up below to be added to our email list. Many highway contractors are also willing to attend your on-campus career fairs.
  • CEFGA CareerExpo. Each March, Georgia Road Jobs has a large exhibit at the CEFGA CareerExpo (link) in Atlanta. If you and your students are attending, please stop by. This is a great opportunity for students to meet road contractors and learn more about careers in the sector.
  • Posters. If you would like a poster to hang in your classroom or career center, we will be glad to send you one. Please complete the form below to request a poster.

Ready to get your students interested in highway construction? We’re here to help. And be sure to check out the Why Highway Work (link) page that provides information about the types of individuals who are best suited for a road construction career – this will aid you in identifying the students most likely to succeed in this industry.
